This trip was a different experience for me in a couple of respects. First, we traveled around the country on roads that took us through many towns and even some villages. Seeing how the people lived--even viewed just from the truck--gave me insight into a part of the country I hadn't seen on other trips to Africa.

The other unique element was how close we were able to get to our subjects--mountain gorillas. To be so close that they sometimes brushed against you as they walked by was something I never expected to do. It was an amazing experience.

We began in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, and then essentially drove around the perimeter of the country. After two days photographing chimpanzees we had three days with the gorillas.
We also saw colobus and golden monkeys, along with some of the more typically seen animals in Africa.

Overall, it was a great trip and the most memorable one (so far).

Only young chimpanzees have brown faces. Once they get older their faces darken.

Colobus monkey. The name colobus comes from the Greek word for “mutilated,” referring to the tiny, non-functional thumb. Their other fingers help them grip branches securely.

This was at the tail end of some kerfuffle between the gorillas. The one in the photo just finished chasing off another one.
